Our Review

Graham's Single Harvest Colheita 1994 is a magnificent single-vintage tawny that has spent over three decades maturing in the cool, humid lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. The result is a wine of breathtaking richness and complexity — a showcase of what extended cask aging can achieve when the starting material is of the highest quality and the stewardship is patient and skilled.

The nose is extraordinary. Rich toffee and dark caramel lead the way, followed by roasted walnut, dried fig, baking spice, candied orange, and a subtle resinous note that speaks to the wine's venerable age. This is Graham's opulent house style dialed up to its full potential, with layer after layer of aroma unfolding over minutes in the glass. On the palate, the wine is opulent and layered, with burnt sugar, roasted hazelnut, Christmas cake, dark honey, and aged oak all perfectly integrated. The texture is velvety and almost liqueur-like in its concentration.

The finish is where this wine earns its exceptional rating. It is very long, with waves of caramel, spice, and dried fruit that cascade across the palate before culminating in a warm, lingering sweetness that is comforting without being cloying. It is the kind of finish that makes you set the glass down and simply sit with the experience.

This is a port for celebration and contemplation. Three decades of aging have produced something that transcends mere wine and enters the realm of liquid art. It is one of the finest colheitas currently available from any house.
