Best Rosé Port
The newest addition to the port family, created in 2008. Rosé port is fresh, fruity, and pink — a modern, approachable style designed for summer drinking and cocktails.
Rosé port is the youngest and most unconventional member of the port wine family. First introduced by Croft in 2008, this pink-hued style broke with centuries of tradition to create something entirely new: a fresh, fruit-forward port wine designed for casual, warm-weather enjoyment. While purists initially viewed it with skepticism, rosé port has earned its place in the port repertoire by attracting a new generation of drinkers and proving that fortified wine can be as refreshing and modern as any still rosé.
The production of rosé port draws on techniques from both the red port and rosé still wine traditions. Red grape varieties — the same Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca used for ruby and stage port — are harvested and gently macerated for a short period, allowing just enough skin contact to extract a beautiful salmon-pink color without the heavy tannins of red port. The must is then fortified with clear grape spirit and aged briefly in inert vessels (typically stainless steel or cement) to preserve the wine's fresh, fruity character and vibrant pink color.
On the palate, rosé port is all about freshness and immediacy. Expect flavors of ripe strawberry, raspberry, watermelon, and Turkish delight, with a subtle floral lift and a smooth, sweet finish. The wine is lighter-bodied than ruby port and lower in tannin, making it extraordinarily easy to drink, especially when well chilled. It is perhaps the most versatile port style for cocktail mixing, working beautifully in spritzes, frozen drinks, and fruit-based cocktails.
While rosé port will never rival aged tawny or vintage port for complexity or gravitas, that is not its purpose. It is a style built for summer afternoons, rooftop bars, poolside sipping, and anyone who enjoys the idea of port wine but finds traditional styles too heavy or serious. Served over ice with a splash of tonic and a few fresh berries, rosé port is as refreshing and appealing as any drink in the wine world.
Serving TemperatureServe very cold at 4–8°C (39–46°F), straight from the refrigerator or even over ice. For a Rosé Port Spritz, pour 60ml over ice, add 90ml tonic water or sparkling water, and garnish with fresh berries and a sprig of mint. Rosé port also makes an excellent base for frozen summer cocktails.
