Our Review

Fonseca's Crusted Port brings the house's famously lush, exotic style to the crusted port format, producing a wine of rich generosity and seductive charm. Like all crusted ports, this is bottled unfiltered and throws a sediment over time, requiring decanting before service. The extra effort is well rewarded.

The nose is unmistakably Fonseca, with ripe black plum and wild berry joined by exotic spice, dark rose, and cocoa powder. The exotic, almost perfumed quality that defines the house is present even here. On the palate, the wine is lush and generous, with blackberry, fig, and milk chocolate providing a rich, satisfying core. Warm cinnamon adds spice, and the tannins are round but assertive enough to provide structure.

The finish is medium-long with rich, enveloping dark fruit, spice, and a warm, generous close. It is Fonseca's signature bear-hug of flavor.

Fonseca's Crusted Port is an excellent choice for those who want the richness and generosity of Fonseca's style without the price of their vintage port. It delivers more concentration and depth than a filtered LBV, and its unfiltered character gives it an authenticity that many will appreciate. For dinner parties and casual entertaining, this is a wine that will impress without breaking the bank.
