Barros Colheita 2000
An approachable, well-priced colheita that proves you do not need to spend a fortune to enjoy single-harvest tawny port.
Our Review
Barros Colheita 2000 is a single-harvest tawny that offers an excellent introduction to the colheita category at a relatively accessible price point. Barros has long been one of the more underrated port houses, overshadowed by the larger British-founded houses, but their colheita program delivers consistent quality and genuine value.
The nose is inviting and warm, with caramel, toasted almond, and dried apricot forming a classic tawny profile, complemented by vanilla, light honey, and a subtle herbal note that adds a touch of interest. On the palate, the wine is smooth and approachable, with butterscotch, walnut, raisin, and gentle spice creating a comforting, almost nostalgic drinking experience. The texture is creamy, and the sweetness is well-balanced — present but not overwhelming.
The finish is medium-long, warm and nutty, with lingering caramel and dried fruit. It does not have the extraordinary complexity or length of the finest colheitas from Kopke or Graham's, but it delivers satisfying quality at every moment.
Barros Colheita 2000 is an ideal gateway colheita. Its approachable character and reasonable price make it perfect for drinkers transitioning from aged tawnies to single-harvest bottlings. It is also an excellent gift — a port from the year 2000 carries a certain millennial significance that adds to the occasion.
