Dow's Colheita 2002
Dow's trademark dry elegance in a single-harvest tawny — structured, refined, and less sweet than most colheitas.
Our Review
Dow's Colheita 2002 is a single-harvest tawny that beautifully translates the house's signature dry, structured style into the oxidative aging format. Where some colheitas lean heavily into caramel sweetness, Dow's maintains the drier, more austere character that has defined the house for over two centuries, resulting in a wine of remarkable elegance and restraint.
The nose opens with toasted almond and butterscotch, followed by dried apricot, orange peel, light cedar, and a subtle smoky note that adds intrigue. It is less overtly sweet on the nose than many colheitas, which immediately signals Dow's house character. On the palate, the wine is refined and structured, with caramel, walnut, and dried fruit forming the core, complemented by clove and the characteristic dry edge that is Dow's hallmark. The acidity is fine and well-judged, providing lift and freshness.
The finish is long and clean, closing with toasted nut, dried orange, and a distinctive mineral dryness that invites the next sip. It is the kind of finish that lingers in the memory as much as on the palate.
The 2002 vintage was strong in the Douro, and Dow's has used the intervening decades of cask aging to craft a colheita that is both characterful and refined. It is an excellent choice for drinkers who appreciate the tawny style but prefer their port with less overt sweetness.
