Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage Port
An artisanal LBV that brings terroir expression and intellectual depth to a category that rarely offers either.
Our Review
Niepoort's Late Bottled Vintage Port is an LBV with a difference. Where most wines in this category aim for straightforward fruit and sweetness, Niepoort's version brings the house's artisanal philosophy and terroir-driven approach to a wine that manages to be both accessible and intellectually stimulating. It is an LBV for thinking drinkers.
The nose is distinctively Niepoort. Wild blackberry and fresh herbs are joined by crushed stone, dark floral notes, and an intriguing black olive tapenade quality that you simply do not find in other LBVs. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and precise, with dark cherry and pomegranate providing fruit, graphite and wild thyme adding savory complexity, and refined tannins maintaining structure over a mineral backbone.
The finish is medium-long with a distinctive mineral lift and herbal freshness that sets this apart from the category standard. Where most LBVs fade into warmth and sweetness, Niepoort's finishes with energy and precision.
Niepoort's LBV is the most interesting wine in its category. It may not have the crowd-pleasing richness of Graham's or the volume of Taylor's, but its individuality and quality make it a compelling choice for anyone who wants more from their everyday port. This is what happens when an artisan winemaker applies serious attention to a category that many houses treat as an afterthought.
