Cockburn's 20 Year Old Tawny Port
An underrated gem that delivers generous, crowd-pleasing flavor at a price that outperforms many better-known competitors.
Our Review
Cockburn's 20 Year Old Tawny Port is a crowd-pleaser in the best sense of the word. It delivers generous flavor and smooth accessibility without sacrificing the complexity that a 20-year age statement demands. This is a tawny designed to be enjoyed rather than analyzed, though it rewards attention for those who wish to give it.
The nose is immediately inviting, with toffee and roasted cashew leading a warm procession of dried apricot, vanilla pod, and a gentle touch of milk chocolate. It is the kind of bouquet that makes you want to take a sip before you have finished appreciating the aromatics. On the palate, smooth butterscotch and toasted hazelnut provide a luscious core, with candied ginger and golden raisin adding brightness and warm cinnamon tying everything together.
The finish is medium-long and gently sweet, with a pleasant warmth that makes it extremely easy to drink. There is a clean closure that prevents the wine from overstaying its welcome on the palate, making it remarkably moreish.
Cockburn's has long been one of the more underrated port houses, and their 20 Year Tawny is a perfect example of the quality they achieve at competitive prices. It may lack the gravitas of Graham's or the austerity of Taylor's, but its approachability and generous flavor profile make it an excellent choice for entertaining and for converting newcomers to the pleasures of aged tawny port.
