Dow's 10 Year Old Tawny Port
Dow's signature dry restraint makes this 10-year tawny one of the most versatile and food-friendly options in its class.
Our Review
Dow's 10 Year Old Tawny Port carries the house's famously dry disposition into the aged tawny category with admirable conviction. This is a wine that prioritizes structure and freshness over richness, making it one of the more restrained and elegant 10-year tawnies available. It is a style that has earned Dow's a devoted following.
The nose is bright and inviting, led by dried apricot and honey with toasted almond and light vanilla providing depth. A wisp of citrus zest adds a refreshing lift that immediately sets the tone. On the palate, smooth caramel and hazelnut are balanced by dried peach and a subtle orange blossom note that gives the wine a floral dimension uncommon at this level.
The finish is unmistakably Dow's. There is a dry, almost peppery close that cleans the palate and prevents any sense of cloying sweetness. This characteristic makes the wine extremely food-friendly and remarkably moreish. You find yourself reaching for the glass again before you have consciously decided to do so.
At its price point, Dow's 10 Year Old is a genuine bargain. It may not have the immediate richness of Graham's equivalent, but its drier style and elegant restraint make it a more versatile pour. This is a tawny that works equally well as an aperitif, a dessert companion, or a contemplative nightcap.
