Our Review

Quinta do Vesuvio's 2016 Vintage Port is a wild, terroir-driven wine from one of the most storied estates in the Douro Superior. Vesuvio is a colossal property by Douro standards, with its own granitic lagares where the grapes are still trodden by foot. The resulting wines have a character that is unmistakably their own — rugged, mineral, and deeply connected to the landscape.

The nose is evocative and complex. Black fig and wild bramble lead, followed by crushed rock, garrigue, eucalyptus, and dark olive. This is a wine that smells like the Douro Superior looks — wild, sun-scorched, and ancient. On the palate, the power is immediate. Blackberry and dried plum are set against schist minerality and rosemary, with robust tannins that carry genuine grip. This is not a wine that flatters in youth; it demands time.

The finish is long with a wild, herbaceous character and impressive mineral drive. The tannins are firm but not harsh, and there is an energy to the wine that suggests significant aging potential. The mineral backbone provides a foundation that will support decades of evolution.

Quinta do Vesuvio 2016 is a vintage port for those who appreciate terroir expression and individuality. It lacks the polished refinement of Taylor's or the seductive richness of Fonseca, but its rugged authenticity is compelling in its own right. This is a wine from a specific place, and that place is writ large in every sip.
