Our Review

Quinta do Noval Fine Ruby Port carries the elegance and refinement that one would expect from this storied estate, even at the most accessible level of their range. Noval is one of the Douro's great single-estate producers, and their fine ruby benefits from the same attention to quality that defines their legendary Nacional bottlings.

The nose is clean and attractive, with ripe red fruit, plum, and blackberry at the forefront, accompanied by subtle floral notes and a hint of dark chocolate. It is less bold than some fine rubies, but there is a polish and refinement that sets it apart. On the palate, the wine is elegant and balanced, with red and black fruit, cherry, and gentle chocolate forming a harmonious whole. The tannins are refined rather than simply soft, and the sweetness is measured.

The finish is medium-length, polished and clean, with lingering red fruit and a delicate spice note. There is a sense of composure about this wine that speaks to Noval's winemaking philosophy.

Quinta do Noval Fine Ruby is a fine ruby for those who value elegance over power. It may not have the exuberance of Fonseca or the richness of Graham's at this level, but its poise and balance make it a versatile companion for food and a dignified introduction to one of the Douro's most respected estates.
