Niepoort Ruby Port
The most characterful fine ruby on the market — Niepoort's artisanal touch elevates a humble category into something genuinely compelling.
Our Review
Niepoort Ruby Port is a wine that consistently punches above its weight class. While technically a fine ruby, it displays a level of complexity and character that approaches reserve ruby territory. This reflects Niepoort's artisanal philosophy — a house that applies the same care and attention to their entry-level wines as to their prestigious garrafeiras and colheitas.
The nose is immediately more interesting than most fine rubies. Dark cherry and blackberry are joined by violet, dark chocolate, and wild herbs, with a touch of wet stone minerality that is distinctly Niepoort. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and surprisingly layered, with black fruit, sour cherry, and dark chocolate forming the core, while herbal complexity adds dimension. The tannins are fine-grained rather than soft, giving the wine a sense of structure that many fine rubies lack.
The finish is medium-long and elegant, with lingering dark fruit, mineral notes, and a touch of spice. It is more contemplative than most wines at this price, rewarding slow sipping rather than casual gulping.
Niepoort Ruby Port is the thinking drinker's fine ruby. It will appeal most to those who value complexity and character over crowd-pleasing sweetness. It also provides an excellent introduction to the Niepoort house style for drinkers who want to explore before committing to the house's more expensive offerings.
