Our Review

Taylor's First Estate Reserve Ruby Port is a textbook example of the Taylor's house style applied to the reserve ruby category. Where Graham's leans into opulence and generosity, Taylor's has always favored structure, precision, and a certain austere elegance, and First Estate captures that identity clearly.

The nose leads with blackcurrant and ripe cherry, joined by wild herbs, cedar, and just a touch of dark chocolate. It is more restrained than some reserve rubies, which may disappoint those seeking immediate sweetness but rewards those who appreciate nuance. On the palate, the wine is structured and vibrant, with black fruit, bramble, and dark plum forming the core. There is a graphite minerality that is distinctly Taylor's, and the tannins are firmer than most wines at this level.

The finish is medium-long, firm, and clean, with persistent berry fruit and a hint of cedar that lingers. It has a precision that sets it apart from more fruit-forward competitors.

First Estate Reserve is the ideal reserve ruby for drinkers who prefer their port on the drier, more structured side of the spectrum. It pairs exceptionally well with cheese and nut-based desserts, where its firmer tannins and moderate sweetness complement rather than compete with the food. It is also an excellent introduction to the broader Taylor's range.
