Graham's Six Grapes Reserve Port
The quintessential reserve ruby — rich, chocolatey, and fruit-forward with enough structure to feel serious at a modest price.
Our Review
Graham's Six Grapes Reserve Port is one of the most compelling wines in the reserve ruby category, sitting comfortably above basic fine ruby but at a price that remains genuinely accessible. The name references the six grape varieties traditionally used in port production, and the wine itself is a testament to the quality that Graham's achieves even at their entry-level tiers.
The nose is immediately seductive. Rich dark cherry and ripe plum dominate, but there is a distinct dark chocolate note that is unmistakably Graham's, along with cassis and subtle hints of mint and black pepper that add nuance. On the palate, the wine is full and generous, with dark fruit compote, bitter chocolate, and a touch of espresso forming a satisfying core. The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine structure without austerity.
The finish is medium-long, trailing off with warm chocolate, spice, and sweet cherry. It does not have the depth or layered complexity of an LBV or vintage port, but it is not trying to be those things. What it does, it does exceptionally well — delivering rich, fruit-driven pleasure with enough structure to feel serious.
Six Grapes occupies a sweet spot in the port world. It is the wine to reach for when you want something more substantial than a basic ruby but do not want to commit to the price or formality of an LBV. It is equally at home poured casually after a weeknight dinner as it is paired deliberately with chocolate desserts or strong cheese.
